After graduating from Carleton University’s School
of Industrial Design in 1986 Sinéad Bomba continued her study of
art and design at the Ontario College of Art. She further refined
her aesthetic and technical skills while working for a world-renowned
Industrial Design consultancy in New York City in the 1990’s. Sinéad
creates her decorative and functional woodturnings from local hardwoods
that have been cut because of age, disease, or storm damage. She
began turning memorial pieces for friends during the Ice Storm of
1998, providing comfort and beautiful lasting memories despite the
widespread devastation. Sinéad reveals the beauty hidden beneath
the surface through sensitive design, technical skill and patience.
Her finishing techniques draw out the warmth of the wood, and her
completed pieces reflect the tactile sensuality of the experience.
For Sinéad, creating three dimensional pieces is meditative. She
balances the stresses of her high technology day-job through her
ongoing connection with natural materials and the tactile aspects
of collecting and transforming fallen wood into art. She has been
awarded numerous ribbons in artistic and functional classes of woodturning
competitions since 1999. Her pieces are found in private collections
around the world, including Ireland, Scotland, England, Australia,
Sweden, and throughout Canada and the United States.
